There are so many people, especially the young, think that a spell is magic. It isn't. A spell is a "request" for magic to happen; usually by performing some ritual. Very much like a prayer. A spell isn't magic of itself! It is a hope that magic result. And, just like a prayer, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

That's an interesting point because on one side it shows us that we are not in complete control of our lives, destinies ect. There is something out there that seems to be a greater power then us and we must ask or in some cases bribe the powers that be to do things for us!

I believe that there are certain laws that magick falls under for instance you cannot no matter how many wish spells you do turn yourself into things your not. And let's get rid of the word spell.

But when we follow this thought pattern and we create this magickal work and we achieve "A Result" maybe not our desired result then wasn't your work still successful. For instance if you cast for luck to increase your wealth for instance a money spell. And three days later you found a wallet with money in it, Setting aside that moral question of do I give the money and the wallet to its owner or keep it, was your work successful??

When people start talking about things being out of our control and having to rely on divine forces, I have to politely disagree. Personally I like the approach Crowley takes to the matter of supernatural beings,

"It is more convenient to assume the objective existence of an "Angel" who gives us new knowledge than to allege that our invocation has awakened a supernormal power in ourselves."

Supernormal, not meaning supernatural, but an unconscious mechanism within ourselves which is outside of the normal everyday ego.

My advice as to the question of success is, who cares? You have the result you wanted, any conclusion has a possibility of being wrong and so avoid conclusions altogether.

I believe we all have a natural ability to awaken ourselves too higher levels of knowledge. But if it's all locked inside ourselves why can't we access it. Where's the magickal key?

We are too concerned with 'I' the ego. People don't look at the whole of the self because it requires effort, can be painful, and in some cases dangerous to the mental well-being.

What you call yourself is a small fraction of the entirity of your consciousness.

But that's what magick is supposed to be! A spiritual journey and yes we have become lazy. Where does magick come from? What is its source?

That depends on who you ask, venturing into the different beliefs. I see no reason to have to say magic comes from a divine source, unless you call the universe and yourself as a part of the universe divine.

Others like to believe gods and spirits help them with their magic, each to their own.

Magic isn't some force, it is merely the changing of one thing into something else. Be that a physical change, or a spiritual one. The method of creating that change varies.

Whether it be the moving of the Earth to cause day to change to night, or a person casting a spell to find a job and create a change in their life.

Magic cannot be defined as simply as you are trying, it is complex, it varies, and people will always disagree.

Witches (and Alchemists) have been changing things for thousands of years. Changing material things, and changing attitudes and beliefs. The "magic" is in the changing! But, some things cannot be changed. You cannot change a frog into a prince: that's a fairy story. Is magic science? Well, the original meaning of the word "science" was "knowledge".Magic is also "knowledge". So both science and magic are akin to each other.

The definition of the word divine is "Of, From, or like God or a God." If you believe in a god or gods they or the power that comes from them is divine. If we as humans come from God/Gods we are divine. I believe the universe is divine, by its very beauty, simplicity, complexity! We certainly have never matched it with anything we made!

Most magickal practices I've studied believe that the source of magick is some form of energy or power. Where it comes from people debate heavily. However modern witchcraft uses terms such as grounding, centering, raising power. These are terms linked with energy. I'm currently studying the Hindu aspect of Pranyama or Prana which means life force. This is also seen in martial arts traditions that use Chi training.

Magick is indeed change I agree. And I think it should be stated that there is a clear difference between creation which is something from nothing! And change which is altering or shifting things around. It would seem that our levels of creation using magick are extremely limited. Or am I missing something?

First of all Vader, you are writing about "beliefs" not magic! Gods, Goddesses, the "divine", have nothing to do with magic; only with beliefs.
And, magic does not "create" anything! It only "changes" things, attitudes, beliefs, environment, physical healing and mental well-being.
I am an Atheist. I do not believe in anything supernatural. But I've used magic all my life!
