Honestly, there has been so many false possessions, that it's hard to know. I think people use demonic possession as a escape of thinking about something bad is actually them thinking. I honestly don't know if it truely exists, but if it did, I am pretty sure that it wouldn't be easy to spot. I am also pretty sure it wouldn't be as dramatic as you see in movies.

The Catholic church will always perform, or at least 'order in', the professional opinions of a psychiatrist (part of me thinks it is two) before performing an exorcism.

In my opinion, they have grown and recognised mental illness can often take the form of what the medieval people would call demonic possession.

I know accounts from people I trust of possession, but I am skeptical myself.

Being neither a priest or a qualified clinical psychologist/psychiatrist I am not knowledgeable enough to give you an opinion either way.

Possession is more of a draining force. It's like a parasite and drains you. The only mental illness associated to people believed of possessed is schizophrenia and autism. If you have mental illnesses, and they're uncontrolled or untreated, it's best if you don't work with magicks because it endangers you and everyone around you. It doesn't take much to diagnoses these and treat them effectively though. If mental illness is in your family history, it may be pressed to you.
