sorry, but you cannot. i was a child who use to pretend to be a mermaid with my best friend, but that was a game. we are humans, and nothing can ever change that. [unless you want to go in for surgery]
as witchessong mentioned, there's different myths about them. some were friendly, others were vengeful, some were born that way forever, others used magic to change, or were cursed somehow. there's a story about them using magic seal pelts to change into mermaids, there's also lore of them drowning humans accidentally or intentionally when they try to drag them to their underwater homes. there are other types of mer-folk depending on the region as well, not just those with fish bottoms and human tops. research them for yourself, it's quite interesting. just keep in mind this is the internet and people do lie, so keep your wits about you.

Well there are the cases when studying in different planes, you wander "Is our plane real? Or is it just a illution?" well every plane is real to a extent. Just some planes can be reach physically. When we enter the astral plane though we can create pretty much anything.
I would like to add something I read from Flaggs profile;
" We are gods, each and every one of us. We hold limitless potential and unlimited knowledge, we simply have forgotten this. "
He is right, our physical bodies are not gods, but our spiritual bodies are more powerful, once our limitations are out of the way. Sense physically we can't do shapeshifting, but spiritually we can do just about anything.
Doesn't mean you do anything rash. Just means you have something to learn about. Just remember our bodies can only do so much. This is because this is our physical form...Some people may call this our vessel.
But this is just my opinion.
So this kind of concludes the whole mermaid transformation thing.
