Ouja boards can be used alone or in a group.

However, make sure that if you are alone you have thoroughly cleansed the area/room you will be using. Also, be sure to cast a protection spell and have something with protective properties on you [examples: Iron, Quartz, Hematite, etc.]

you can use it alone. i find it difficult because you hold the planchette differently and it hurts my wrists. you don't need to cast a spell, a circle yes, but a protection wouldn't hurt.
