High magick is basically ceremonial magick eg: rituals with intense energy and vibrational states. You can find more information on it by looking up the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Personally I find it to be over dramatized and would rather shoot myself in the foot that follow it seriously, but it does work for some people.

The definition of higher magick is correct. Those seeking it out often think when they see the term "higher" that there is more "power" to be attained. Which is the human ego playing it's part. But in truth since knowledge is power, then it could be rightly seen that way.

With Ceremonial Magick you will often find yourself practicing in larger numbers or in a group. As opposed to just on your own. Though ritual magick can be practiced on your own, it tends to incorporate all the "basics" as a whole, kinda like taking meditation and/or spell work to a "higher" level.

Ceremonial magick is often performed on special occasions, such as Sabbats or simply welcoming a new member into a Coven in a formal and official manner. The paths of Shamanism and some of Crowley type based paths do a lot of ceremonial work. Though a lot of studying and research goes into performing one. Such as there are more factors and ideals at work at the same time. Always strive to understand how and why something works before performing it, and never do it just because someone says to do it. ;)

in my recent readings i have seen that higher magick is often refered as magick for selfish purposes and lower magick for the good of others. there seems to be lot's of different explinations out there :-) which is good as surely all magick is about disscussion, thank you for all who have answered my question though, my quest continues :-)

Both can be used for self-gain and to help others. Higher magick isn't necessarily Selfish, I can do a long and elaborate ritual to help heal someone and Lower magick isn't always for the good of others, I can use a mojo bag to protect and attract love for myself.

I don't see how self-gain is considered selfish. If we Shouldn't help ourselves, how can we help others? :)

haha At the end of the day all magick has some kind of personal gain to it. So whoever came up with that "law" is full of crap. Even healing someone is a personal interest. it's obviously the lesser of all evils but ya get my point. You're higher magick is more into rites and ceremonies. However i feel that direct implications can be just as effective as any ritual :P

I couldn't agree more with my ladies. Everything we do has selfish purposes behind it to some degree or another. Be it personal satisfaction, more direct means such as finding employment or because "we" don't want to see someone else go through something.
