spells and rituals?

what is the difference between a spell and a ritual? and do you have to cast a circle to do a spell?

Go to the newbie part of this site, a spell and a ritual can be very different, you can do a spell withen a ritual, but many rituals are done for celebration, honoring, healing,without any spells involved. Regarding circles... A teacher of mine would always say, when in doubt cast!! Casting a circle is always a good thing, some people cast spells for every little thing, and I doubt they cast a circle everytime, but particularly when you are starting out in Magic, I think it is a good idea.
