I do believe that either spelling of the word can be used in this day and age, as I've seen both used by numerous individuals that practice a Pagan religion.
Not to mention a mentor isn't at all needed for the basics.
Join a coven, and ask questions... or you could always just start clicking around google or reading random forums on here.
Good places to start:

~Chakras
~Meditation
~Laws and Concepts
~Building Altars (basics)
~Major Tools
~Basic Herbology
~Lucid Dreaming
~Terminology of Spell Casting (gotta know what it's called)

I alredy know how to heal with energy and using my special stones. But I would like to learn Reiki healing. Please email me if you can teach me. Thank you so much!
While i agree that a mentor is great to have while learning to use magick effectivly, i wanted to stress that your mentor isnt someone who opens up the heavens and gives you all the answers to life. even with a mentor the student should take it upon themselves to learn all that they can, (i.e using google, certain websites, books, etc) and if they have questions or want to verify anything thats when a mentor should be asked for assistance.
As for where to begin in magick, meditation and grounding yourself is key to the rest of what you will learn. i suggest starting with that and plenty of research. once youve done that the basics are a good way to go and from there you can begin learning about a specific category of magick.
i hope youve found what you were looking for at this site :)
