I know what you mean Fargoth. I'm lucky to also have a wolf. In my tribe's culture, the wolf spirit is a teacher and a warrior. He is strong and fierce when he needs to be, yet he is loving and teaches us many life lessons. I'm getting a tattoo in the next two weeks to honor mine on a more personal level. After all he's guided me through, I feel just hanging pictures isn't enough.

Yes, of course! Actually, a lot of tribes believe your guide lives in your chest. The Jivaro shaman especially believe this and always keep their medicine bags around their necks and close to the chest. When they ask them to help in healing, they bring them from their chest. Also, when a spirit retrieval is done, the spirit is blown into the patients chest after it is brought back from the Lower World.

Well, I'm not too sure on that. Most people in tribes didn't search for one until the age of 12 or 13. From birth to age 12 you already have one. Infants and children have them. These totems are temporary and are there only to guard the child in their vulnerable state. Usually in young children, their favorite animal is usually their totem. They don't understand the connection but they feel it. This totem is also temporary and serves nearly the same purpose as the younger. Usually when a child reaches puberty is when they went out for a vision quest to find and take in their totem. This totem is permanent and will most likely stay with the person until death, unless another totem is needed and will replace it. People often have more than one animal also. I myself have three. Hope that helped.
