The most commonly accepted answer is that you can feel pain from getting hurt while consciously astral projecting, though it really depends on who you ask as we all experiece things differently.
You'll also want to make sure your intent is clear and that you have taken protective measures before you project as sometimes 'nasties' can hitch a ride back as your consciousness shifts back to every day consciousness.
this is a topic of which i have a lot of experience. i spend several hours of every day in the astral realm. you cannot be physically hurt while in astral form. your body can but your astral self cannot. and as for protection it is simple. carry a crystal or make a circle to negate negative energy or cast simple protection spells.

Grounding your energy and centering your mind is often considered the first step for any kind of spiritual working (again, depending on who you ask). The simplest shield is the feeling of safety, so think back to a place in your head (and possibly your memories) where your safe haven was. Call that feeling up again before and during projection. Anything beyond that is really up to you.
As Eissy said, if you have yourself grounded well enough and clear from any negative thought, you'll be fine.
It's the astral, where the thoughtforms rule :) Believing you'll be hurt can really bring this to you in the astral. Though by having a strong connection with your corporal body, within a split second you can be back.
Anxiety, shock, fear and etc are like a magnet to pull you back to your body again. However, you would also like to have your chakras cleaned in order to have a safe body to return rather than attracting negativity. Cleanse the area where you want to perform Astral Projection and don't be scared. Fear will only ruin your moments there instead of enjoying the pleasurable experiences.
