I am 56 years old and have been around Wicca for most of my life. I have been a Solitary Practitioner for a long time. My Mother grew up in the Unity church. It is a denomination which believe that all religions hold truth as long as they support the greater good in humanity. When she went to collage in the late 1960's and early 1970's she became a Hippie and and an actvist. She later evolved her spirituality to embrace Wicca. My father was a High School Physics and Chemistry teacher and had a very scientific outlook on life. I kind of grew up with this duality as part of my childhood.
When I was in my 20's and going to collage in the 1980s I was also wrestling with what our society told us a man should be and the fact I was gay. I met a wonderful woman at that time and we became close friends. She followed the principles of Wicca and had a beautiful soul. She was one of the first people I told about my sexuality and she helped me come to terms with this. It was through her that I also began to understand the duotheistic nature of the Goddess and the God, something I had not picked up on from my mother as her beliefs focused primarily on the Goddess alone.
My beliefs are rooted in science, thanks Dad. This is how I comprehend the forces in the universe and the duotheistic existence of the Goddess and the God. I do believe that 13.5 billion years ago the big bang event occurred. Prior to this all of time and existence was condensed to a incredibly dense point of matter that in a microsecond erupted and blasted out all of the elements of the universe. If that wasn't divine then please tell me what is.
I believe everything that makes up the universe is a product of this cosmic event. From the farthest galaxy to our own star. The world we live on and all the life that surrounds us. Everything down to the smallest of particles are all elements of the cosmos that was born from this event. It is energy that binds all of it together and this energy is dynamic! Where life exists in the galaxy there also exists the energy forces that make life possible. There is the feminine from which all life flows and the masculine to propagate that life through her. The Goddess and her consort the God.
I believe that this energy that flows through us and binds all the elements of existence together can be subtly influenced. With the energy that makes us and flows through us and from us we can also affect the energy that surrounds us. That being said we need to have a deep meditative state of mind with the intent from this meditative state of mind to influence it. I think this is where mainstream religions get it partially right through the act of prayer. Still I thoroughly believe it is the ancient beliefs that got it right.
It is my personal understanding and belief this is how our magic as witches is generated and manifests. The energy of the cosmos is a vast roaring river and all our efforts are just a trickle but if done in harmony with the flow it can be directed to effect change.
An ye harm none, do what ye will.
Over the last 30 years that I have been following the principles of Wicca my beliefs flow strong or ebb weak depending on how the rational part of my mind conflicts with the yearning of my soul but I am only human and I feel this duality is something we all have to contend with to some degree.
I am not a teacher, I am always learning. I am open to making suggestions only when it is asked for and can only pass along what works personally for me. How that translates to you depends on your own personal journey.
