Familiars?

So when I was young, I had an extremely clever and sweet cat named Harley. He died many years ago. Still, he appears whenever I summon him, possesses my current cat (she hates Harley's old bell toy, Harley loves it) ,helps me with spells, and appears in my dreams. Is he a familiar or just a spirit guide?

I would suggest it sounds more like a spirit guide.

Familiars are entities that we create to do specific tasks for us. Since this is a spirit which visits you and not something you created, I would lean towards spirit guide.
