In the western zodiac there are twelves signs that each show a bit about our personalities. Later I will go further in depth to explain the moon sign, the ascendant and the houses. While there are now 12 recognizable signs, there is a thirteenth. This sign falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius. The sign was removed for not extending long enough into the astrological cycle. The sign is known as Ophiuchus the serpent bearer.
The 12 signs that are commonly known are as follows:
Aries (March 21st-April 19th)
Taurus (April 20th-May 20th)
Gemini (May 21st-June 20th)
Cancer (June 21st-July 22nd)
Leo (July 23rd-August 22nd)
Virgo (August 23rd-September 22nd)
Libra (September 23rd-October 22nd)
Scorpio (October 23rd-November 21st)
Sagittarius (November 22nd-December 21st)
Capricorn (December 22nd- January 19th)
Aquarius (January 20th-Febuary 18th)
Pisces (February 19th-March 20th)
To each sign there is an animal attributed:
Aries- The ram
Taurus- The bull
Gemini- The twins
Cancer- The crab
Leo- The lion
Virgo- The virgin
Libra- The scales
Scorpio- The scorpion (also the Eagle and the Phoenix)
Sagittarius- The archer
Capricorn- The goat (sea goat)
Aquarius- The water bearer
Pisces- The fish

Each sign also has an element attributed to it. The element that falls under the sign is a basis for the personality.

Extrovert or Introvert? Each sign in the zodiac falls into one or the other. Extroverts are people who are happiest when they're in a crowd of people or hanging out with their friends, parties, etc. The don't feel the need to relax often at home. It either bores them or they can't handle their own company.
Introverts are people who prefer to spend time alone, away from crowds, people, parties, etc. They would rather sit alone at home by themselves than have to endure going out. When they do go out on the off chance they can become irritated and need to vanish for a few days to recharge their batteries before heading out again.

Due to me being lazy this section is taken from "The Complete Handbook of Astrology" it is not my work. The Cardinal Personality:
Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are Cardinal signs, and as such are concerned with initiating matters. Vigorous and ambitious in their actions, the Cardinal signs are extremely good at beginning projects, but often lack the staying power to see them through- except for Capricorn who have the cautious practicality of their element earth behind them
The Fixed Personality:
Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, and Aquarius- as Fixed signs- are concerned with conserving things, and are very resistant to change. They are thus often steadfast, supportive individuals who can be relied upon to see things through, but who may find it difficult to start things off- with the exception of Aquarians who always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else but who can still seem set in their ways at times.
The Mutable Personality:
Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo, and Pisces are Mutable signs with an adaptable energy and marked versatility. While they are extremely good at picking up an idea then developing it, they lack the stability to deal with routine for long- except for Virgos, who are established by the element earth.

The sign which is rising over the horizon at the moment of birth and which can only be calculated from an accurate birth time is known as the Ascendant or rising sign. Someone born at dawn has the Sun on the Ascendant. But and individual born earlier or later in the day on the other hand, will have a different Ascendant to the sign which his or her Sun falls.
Each sun signs has 12 possible Ascendants, and each rising sign will affect rather differently how we see the outside world, as well as how in turn other people see and form their impression of us. Your Ascendant thus influences the protective coloring which your Sun sign adopts in its approach to the outside world, providing the outward expression of personality.
If the Sun sign is Cancer, for example a good and emotional sign), has a Virgo Ascendant it will give the outward impression of an efficient and well organized individual. A Gemini Ascendant would make for a lively communicator; while Sagittarius as a rising sign would project the aura of an adventurous free spirit. Each off these facades would overlie the basically sensitive, home-loving Cancerian nature.

A point "over head in the sky", shown at the top of the birth chart, the Mid-heaven can only be calculated if the time of birth is known. It represents the way in which and individual will interact with the outside world. Often linked to the career choice which a person makes, the Mid-heaven may also indicate the specific vocation- such as medicine (Scorpio), nursing (Virgo), or religion (Pisces)- to which a person is particularly suited.
The Mid-heaven can also indicate qualities which an individual values and seeks to develop as life progresses. Sagittarius on mid-heaven may show that knowledge is held in high regard, so that the individual may become the perpetual student who never stops learning. Cancer on the Mid-heaven, however, may indicate that particular store is set by emotional sensitivity which the individual seeks to express through interaction with children or as a social worker, for instance.

The Bright Side:
The Aries personality is fiery and warm, passionate and self-expressive with an urge to act- now! This not a patient sign: everything is done on impulse, and with great urgency.
Enterprise:
Aries is a courageous leader, not averse to taking risks, but will often feel that "I know best". As Aries has a quick grasp of the essentials of any situation, this may well be so; but Aries rarely hands around to check out the details. However, give Aries a good cause for which to fight, a problem to solve, or a new idea to pioneer and this enterprising personality comes into its own.
Intolerance:
The Darker side:
Strangely enough for such an active sign, one of it's main failings is that of procrastination. Although Aries is extremely impatient and intolerant of delay, the Aries personality is prone to put off what must be done (tax returns, for example) if the matter to be put underway is simply not interesting. Similarly, Aries may resort to lies rather than undergo the inconvenient or boredom of being forced into doing something they would rather not do. Arians can also blunt, often causing offense, or employ bullying tactics in a selfish desire to have their own way.
Egotist:
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and "Me first" is the Arian motto. Active and out going, the personality is all set to make its mark on the world- but this can lead to a selfish, egotistical attitude to life. In a vulgar manner, this often proves successful: because the simple fact of the matter is what Arians want, they usually tend to get.

The Bright Side:
Taurus has a patient, steadfast and reliable personality. People generally know where they are with Taurus- unless they make the mistake of goading one too far. The Taurean personality is also warm and sensual, with an appreciation of fine things.
Security:
As Taurus is firmly motivated by a need for security, this sign often is excellent at business matters and can be trusted to plan and carry things through carefully with resolute attention to detail. An Earth sign, they also value the environment and will do everything possible to preserve its well-being.
The Darker Side:
Unfortunately, the personality can be so committed to self- preservation and so cautious in approaching anything new that it may become boring- although many people are prepared to brave the possibility of tedious evening in view of the excellence o the food served at their dinner parties. They at their best are typically "strong, silent types" but all too often they appear ignorant and willfully obstinate to others.
Explosive:
They have two other main difficulties, in interacting with people: A very slow-to-rouse but terrible temper and possessives. Sexual jealousy, another trait, can often lead to explosions of anger.
Endurer:
The typical personality is earthy, solid and enduring, continuing with dogged persistence long after everyone else has given up. However, they can be particularly resistant to change, unable to adapt to ne and innovative ways of thinking.

The Bright Side:
The Gemini personality is bright, witty, and adaptable. Very little troubles a Gemini, or stops one talking for long- Geminis can argue their way out of any situation. Having a lively curiosity, they also excel at it, and expressing it an an accessible way to the waiting world. This personality can do almost anything- so long as it does not cause boredom, anathema to Geminis. With so many talents and an ability to make something out of nothing, Gemini's difficulty lies in deciding where, and how, to concentrate. Gemini are almost always doing at least two things at once, you will usually find.
Volatile: (The Darker Side)
The Gemini personality's greatest faults are inconsistency and superficiality. Other people never quite know what to expect; indeed, Gemini cannot be relied upon to do anything. All that chasing about and mind-changing leave little time for them to go within and assess things on a deeper level, and this can lead to mental overload.
Cunning:
There is a side of Gemini's which can be quite a surprise to admirers of their other qualities, since there can be a deep streak of cunning and also a tongue which can become positively lethal at times, when provoked.
Communicator:
The self- expressive Gemini personality simple has to communicate, knows everything, forms strong opinions and is always right- except that Gemini's can change their minds so quickly that they may end up contradicting themselves. Consequently, Geminis can appear indecisive or hypocritical.
