You should never care what people think, just have an opinion of yourself and that is all that really matters. Everyone thinks different and not everyone will appreciate the same things that you do.

I agree with what ChironJackal said. Not sure about the fluffy moron part lol, but everything else..very true. Most people consider magic tricks to be magic and immediately think you're bonkers if you say you actually believe in the real kind. I think this might also be because the first response to someone saying they can do magic usually is "show me". And when whatever they do doesn't live up to the expectations well..
Hopefully my twisted explanation makes sense. :)
It's pretty much the same thing with..satanism for eg. Now..I'm not advocating for it, just using it to make a point. Because a bunch of teens decide to raid cemeteries at night and call themselves satanists, then people naturally assume that everyone else is the same and that satanism is nothing more than painting pentagrams and hurting cats. See my point?
And last but not least, people fear and subsequently discriminate against what they don't understand. And that's a fact.

I don't feel like an outcast, but I do get extremely lonely at times. My friends are each pretty "out there" in their own ways, but I always seem to be the one to go just a little bit farther, whatever the subject. They think I'm a harmless space cadet, and any attempt at a serious conversation eventually reaches a stalemate of blank stares on both sides lol.

Two of my friends have family members that are conservative Christians, and I've learned to behave and keep my mouth shut for the sake of my friends. My family sees the books I collect and the weird "trinkets" I buy, but no one really cares one way or the other. If they knew I seriously heeded and practiced some of the information in those books, it wouldn't bother them because they don't believe it will do anything. There is no fear of me raising devils or turning anyone into a toad, and even with my little "eccentricities" I function perfectly well in society, so there is no fear for my sanity either.

Do I think the discrimination is unfair? That's kind of a loaded question. Clearly the word implies mistreatment. I think being on the receiving end of nasty feelings born of ignorance is unpleasant and unfair, but I also think it is equally unfair to demand people to see us a certain way.
