I thought people were born with an element, you couldn't change it?

Fire - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Earth - Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Air - Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Water - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

I am an Aquarius, therefore my element is air.
Hope this helps :)

If Azreal is right that a person can be born with two elements, then i have a really big problemoon.
i have the attributes of all the elements!!!
1. i am passionate,future oriented(fire)
2. i am emotional,imaginative,day dreamer,secretive,sympathetic,mystical(water)
3. i am logical thinker, have good creativity, social, curious(air)
4. i am patient, have perseverance,organized,self disciplined(earth)

I'm Ice, baby. Sub-Elements for the win.

Elements are defined to you by nature.
Its What You Best Work With.
My Zodiac says Air, but I can't work with Air worth nuttin'.
My personality says something along the lines of some chaotic hamster on fire...

AvatarSolare, we are all born with abilities of all elements, better with one then another by nature.
Its possible for anyone to master the four basic elements, but it'd be VERY difficult.

How to discover your magical element and become in tune with it.

There are four elements in magick: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. How do you find out what your element is?

The easiest way to discover your element is to look at your astrological Sun sign. The Sun sign is the core of an individual, the overriding nature and will. The twelve zodiac signs are grouped by element. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius correspond to Fire. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces correspond to Water. Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini correspond to Air. Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo correspond to Earth.

Once you know what element is attributed to your Sun sign, you can begin to explore. Take time to learn everything you can about your element. Dive deep into the correspondences, do meditations, practice magical rituals focused on that element. Here are a couple suggestions. (we are all able to work with each element, although most of us have an affinity to one or maybe two in particular, this is a good place to start)

One great practice for this purpose is learn which Major Arcana card from the Tarot is associated with your Sun sign, preferably using one of the decks inspired by an occult tradition such as Rider-Waite, Crowley's Thoth deck, or decks from the Golden Dawn or BOTA. Read the source text about the card, research each symbol, contemplate it, and see how the ideas exude in your personality and actions.

Spend time with and pay attention to the physical manifestation of your element. Visit a park or the woods if you're Earth, go swimming if you're Water, build a fire (carefully!) if you're Fire. If you're Air, meditate on your breathing, go to a mountain peak, pay attention to the wind. Gather items that remind you of the physical element and keep them in a place where you will see them regularly.

You can also contact the Elemental appropriate to your element for guidance and understanding of that element. Gnomes govern Earth, Sylphs govern Air, Undines govern Water, and Salamanders govern Fire.

You can do many other things to bring yourself in tune with your element, but these are some basics to get you started. A couple of excellent books packed with many correspondences to the four elements, among other things, are 777 by Aleister Crowley, and The Magician's Companion by Bill Whitcomb. With these books and a little imagination, you'll find other ways to explore the elements.

The element of the astrological sign is not anything to do with the literal physical representation of that element. Rather, the physical representation has to do with characteristics of the non-physical traits which are named after the element, for the sake of simplicity.

Also remember that there is a lot more to one's astrological profile than just the sun sign. The sun moves through all twelve signs of the Zodiac (sticking to the most common system; yes, I know there are some very interesting variances out there!) throughout the year. This sign is believed to represent the core of the person.

The moon sign -- the moon moves through the circle of the Zodiac through the month -- represents how the person represents themselves emotionally, and aspects of the inner self.

The rising sign -- that which is coming above the horizon at the time of birth -- is meant to represent how the person presents themselves to the world. That is, the rising sign is the outward appearance and behavior of the person, modified by their sun sign.

The twelve houses -- whether using whole-sign houses or the Placidus system being the most common -- are determined by the rising sign. From there, the placement of the planets, and their angles to each other, are used to divine the rest of the chart.

To bring things back to the topic, one's sun sign has little to do with the totality of a person's 'element.' There are aspects of several signs and elements throughout a person's chart, and the broader ideas of each element is only there to give an idea of a way a person expresses an aspect of their life. It has basically nothing to do with actual air, water, fire, or earth.
