X-Men (may also include Spiderman, the Hulk, Heroes, Dark Angel, etc.)
Caution *** Three asterisks, but more prevalent in psionics than magic. It goes something like...
Person A: Is it possible to change your DNA for special abilities?
Person B: If you can change your DNA, you already have a special ability. Duh.
Person C: No need to be nasty, I think he was asking if there was a way to pass his abilities on to his kids.
Person B: I think he was asking for a way to not have to work for his powers like we do.
Person A: I was only asking, sheesh...
Sources They seem to continue the genre of special abilities in sci-fi/fantasy comic book adventures...
Fakery ... and as always, they're meant to fit the story or the tv/movie budget rather than the reality.
Inspired As for whether psychic/magical abilities are genetic, or above such mundane things as genetics, it's always up for debate. Practitioners who simply take on the magic mantle after generations before them, tend to know what they're doing-- is that blood, though, or is that upbringing?
Or for those who find out later that an almost-forgotten relative had their same talent-- is it genetic, or could it be karmic (you're encouraged to expand your talents after learning that family history... or maybe even reincarnation is involved, though the talent transcends into spirit rather than passing on by blood.)

On the other hand, genetics is not yet fully mapped, and the genes scientists have found have effects in... well, everything... more than appearance and health: there's a gene that effects likelihood of depression, there's a gene for aggression, for controlling the body clock, for attention spans... so why not psychism?
