If there is a specific loved one you wish to speak to, you can give them an honoring ceremony, offer something they liked in life (food and/or drink) and invite them into your circle. Then you should meditate and clear your mind. Pay attention to your emotions, any random thoughts not of your own, you may be lucky enough to hear them if you're open to it.
If you're talking about random spirits, my best advice to you is to work on clairaudiency or learn to use a pendulum.

When using a pendulum to speak to spirits, for the beginner I suggest casting a circle with the intent of only those who speak truth and do not wish harm can enter. Use appropriate herbs/oils/sigils that support truth and ward malevolence. This way, you will be able to communicate freely without worry of lies or mischievious intentions.
But before venturing into communication with spirits be sure that you're experienced with protection and banishment. When inviting spirits to speak with you, you tend to attract the not so nice ones too.
I'm only really interested in talking to my dad and my aunt. I've heard my aunt speak to me before, but just once while I was getting a tattoo to honor her. My dad, well I used to be able to feel his presence from time to time, but it doesn't happen as often as the first couple years after he passed. I also used to live in a "haunted" house and spoke to the ghost there, although she never spoke back she was listening. Shed mess with our TV and video games but if i said I was putting on a movie for my kids she'd stop and everything would work fine. So I know I can, I just never tried to start a conversation and need a little direction.
Well talking to spirits is somoething people are naturally born with, but they can develop it with lots of time and practice using meditation and chakra works. The best way is to work with all chakras but psychic part is associated with the 6th chakra which is also known as the third eye, which is located just between nose and above the eye brow. If you practice meditation daily you can start to see results but it can take some time.
if you wishes to work with your chakras, i would recommend joyofsatan.com.. but take note!!! just the meditation part.. i wouldn't recommend that you read the whole thing.. just the meditation part.. lol.. but it's up to you.. ;)
My preferred method is just through meditation although in my own experience I’ve never started a conversation as such. I’ve invited another party into communicating but I always let the spirit start talking, that’s just a personal thing out of respect for the dead though. I’m not certain exactly how I invite them I just adopt a calm and relatively patient feeling, if you knew the person then filling your mind with memories of them is usually enough to get their attention I find, if you don’t then simply focusing on the will to communicate with them works but is a little more general, less specific and increases the risks significantly as you don’t know who’ll answer, I wouldn’t recommend that.
Whatever method you choose I’d use at least some basic protection, most spirits harbor no ill will against the living but those that do tend to be the more forward of them and so need warding off, circles are fairly basic and probably one of the most effective methods of protection. Oh and as a side note, if a spirit doesn’t want to talk don’t try and force it to, just move on and try again another time.
