ToTM: Music

September's T opic of The Month is Music!

With so many cultures around the world it's interesting to see how they incorporate music. It's done during festivals, in temples or churches, some do it during funerals, or for a variety of other reasons. Tell us how you use music in a spiritual way to enrich your life. Have you used it in meditation? How about in trancework or an altered state? Have you used it in yoga or while reciting mantras? What about singing or playing instruments as an offering? When you use music, what sort of genre do you go for? What kinda vibes are you looking for? Are there any particular composers or artists you are more fond of?

I sometimes sing as an offering to Ares. Usually something super metal like Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, or Avenged Sevenfold. There are some really cool Greek hymns I have found to learn and sing to him as well. I found some videos of them being done in Greek at this festival in Greece so the pronunciation is for sure correct and I have the English translation so that I will know what I am saying as well.

As for meditation, I am fond of Adrian Von Zieglar as well! That and Nox Arcana, Tim Janus, Derek Fletcher, Brian Fletcher, Brunuhville, Peter Gundry, and a little bit of Wardruna. I'm no Heathen but their music is tribal and fierce sounding so it helps me really zone out.

On a mundane note, I play music when gaming and sometimes softly when reading. Almost always in the car. Thankfully my husband is content with whatever I put on so we never fight over the music even though he is a little pop princess with a metalhead wifey lol.

I have used it in meditation. I prefer Reiki or something similar for that.

I find new age and shoegaze music work well. I find it easier to concentrate or trance when I listen to those.

Music and mantras are important to me when doing my workings. I like to have music going when I do most of my workings, even when I meditate. I find that different sounds help me with different intentions and helps me to build up and use the right energy.

So like say I have a curse I want to enact I would listen to music that helps me manifest the right kind of energy, like Metal or Industrial music would be what I would listen to for that. If I am doing a healing I would llisten to something that is more mellow ilike classical music. Sometimes I listen to Hindu mantras, these I tend to listen to when I am working on meditations or trance work, and sometimes when divining. I have chanted mantras to my Deity, Kali, as offerings as well. When I want general sounds and when I don't want music I like hearing nature sounds instead. A lot of what I listen to I find on youtube :)

My favorite music though, is what they sing and play instruments to at the local Kali Temple I go to. That is an amaing expereince to have people creating this rich atmoshere with songs and mantras at the foot of the shrine.

I have chanted mantras to my Deity, Kali, as offerings as well.
