I read a lot of people talking about the price of magic but I've yet to read about specifics. Instead the vague, doom and gloom type responses, please tell me: what is the price of magic? What happens when you "make a deal with the devil"? Love magic? Black magic? What happens so horrible that so many send out warnings?
Some love casts are designed poorly, and will end up rebounding on the caster if they are cast wrong or incorrectly. Some gods will rebound a love cast if the appeasement isn't fulfilled. Aphrodite is a good example as she's known for her extreme jealousy and without appeasement/ or favorable gifts after her help, she'll rebound a spell for a curse.
Black magic/ Dark magic/ Bloodletting requires some sacrifice on the part of the caster. It could be anything. A devotion of soul, a pact with the demon/devil, blood, hair, a sacrificial animal. But most demons/ and curse gods want a sacrifice before they intervene.
Then there are some spells that invoke gods or goddesses that you are unfamiliar with or shouldn't have an affliation with. That they are used to drain fear/ dreams/ miracles/ or hope from you. Incubus and Succubus come to mind, but they're not the only demons that can be "accidentally" invoked if you cast poorly or misguided. Doors can be opened every time you cast, so you have to know what you're doing.
Magic realy has no price, but the intende of ones spell may change that, some spells tend to have a monkeys paw effect, like love spells, which dont realy make someone love you but give the illusion of love, and as if that isn't bad enough than in some cases they make the target obsessive, and there is no such thing as black magic, magic has no color, it depends on the intende, and why would one make a deal with the devile, while in spells people do tend to to ask gods (or other entaties) to help there spell, but why would they offer something in exchange, since a person belief is enough to them (belief and worship give them power, or fear mostly in the devil's case (so you can blame church that he even exists, just saying))

Totally agree. I've experience four types of screwups myself (If you disagree with any of it, I'd be interested to hear your experience) :
The spell was poorly designed. For example, one spell I did, instead of taking care of a need it magnified it until I was almost nuts.
The spell did things against my personal beliefs. My magic system does not really work well with causing damage to other people (unless that damage will improve their lives later). Basically I got a nasty cold and couldn't do magic for a week after I tried to curse someone. I suspect that this doesn't happen to everyone
The spell would take away free will or do something really unlikely. My personal theory is that magic affects probability to create a favorable outcome. If you just force a choice on someone they wouldn't normally pick (unless they developed a greater understanding of something, had more compassion or patience, etc) It's just not going to happen, because the conditions in the universe just aren't there. The same with teleportation, or tossing fire balls; it's just not likely or possible. In this case the cost is just time or energy wasted.
Just casting too many spells at a time takes a toll. Not because you're being punished, but because strong magic takes willpower and mental effort. If you do too much without sleeping or meditating, you'll be exhausted. So don't cast frivolously or forget to take care of yourself
In my experience and opinion, it comes down to the basic science in magic. For every force there is an equal and opposite force. What you send out will come back. Negative equals negative and positive equals positive. If you curse, you will be cursed. If you bless, you will be blessed. If you tamper with someones free will, that can be negative or positive depending on intent and is still a topic of much debate. Though most agree that tampering with free will is negative, regardless of reason or intent. The price is the return as well as what is sacrificed and anytime one uses magic, science, prayer or brute force there can and will be consequences, good, bad or both. One woman I knew in Florida cast a spell to get rich. Her sister died and left her real estate and money. She believes to this day that was punishment for her spell. The price was too great but everything is more clear in hindsight. Hope, with what others have posted, that this explains it. :-)
I think the reason most people believe in the law of 3 in magick is so they do not become comsumed by paranoia that they are being attacked because they have put out negativeity for personal gain and at the expense of others.
Everything u do comes at a price, I want to find something to take away my love, the price for that is it will leave a big hole in my heart, I won't be able to love nor have the need to be loved, and the very few things I do care about I will lose, but that is a price I'm willing to pay. It depends what it is and why your doing it.
