Meditating is not so much "focusing" as in allowing your subconscious Mind to take over! It is impossible to completely empty your Mind; the idea is to get rid of all thoughts except one,then that one disappears as your "conscious brain" fades.
A good way to do this is to concentrate on an object. A lighted candle,a little statue, Anything, really, until the object and your immediate surroundings seem to "disappear". Then your very powerful sub-conscious brain "takes charge", and very strange and wonderful things begin to happen.You really do have knowledge that you didn't know you had!
I learnt with a small bowl of water; but any object will do. Don't try too hard! Just let it happen.
