Basic Magick Concepts.

Gerald Gardner who is I believe the father of modern Wicca believed that their were eight ways to achieve gnosis or connection with magickal power. I agree with only five but here are the eight. Meditation, breath control, Isolation, Intoxication, Sound, Body Movement, Sex, and Pain.

I do not believe that isolation of the self has any barring on magick at all. I think that it is never necessary to get drunk or high to use magick or gain spiritual enlightenment. I also think that pain can lead too magickal experience but also is completely unneeded.

Meditation, breath control, isolatiion, sound and body movement are absolute necessities. Sex, intoxication and pain can be used, but they must be used under the right circumstances and instruction. I agree with you that the last three are not a necessity. Most people do not understand how to use them properly, or when to discard them. The run the danger of becoming obsessions.

The two things I would add to the list is dicipline and dedication.

Good point. Meditation is the discipline of the mind body and spirit. Dedication is also very necessary.

So, maybe we should elaborate on them a bit.

First, Meditation. This is an absolute requirement. Now, as I see it there are two kinds of meditation: Active and Passive. Passive meditation is Zen-like meditation. Quiting the mind and the like, focusing on breathing, those kind of things. This is important, because you need to be focused, not distracted and bouncing from one thing to another, and able to focus your energy on just one thing. However, doing this by itself will not produce results in magic.

Active meditation, such as Silva Method, guided meditation, pathworking and the like, are where you do your actual work. This allows you to direct energy, program and create magical effects. As you can see on the pic on my profile titled "The Minds and the Source" (email me and I will add you to see the pics), the subconscious mind is the direct connection to the higher levels, not the conscious mind. So, you must be able to communicate with the subconscious mind and relay instructions, requests and the like in a manner that they will be processed. This is typically done through images, sounds and symbols. When these are combined properly, you have results.

There are many, many different ways of doing using these methods to grow and advance. I have all my students start off learning Silva Method (again, email me and I'll send you a link). It is very effective at combining the Passive and Active meditations into one exercise. Through the mental programing exercises you are able to communicate with the higher source to make changes in your life. Part of its focus is getting the the brains frequency down to 7 cycles per second. This is percieved as Alpha state, and (of interest to the Earth based paths) is the same frequency that the Earth resonates at. This allows us to attain a deeper level of consciousness and a stronger connection to the source.

Meditation is the basic skill that all other exercises are built on. Without it, you can't effectively cast spells, manipulate energy, conduct the forces of mass ritual, or make changes to yourself and your enviroment. It also gives you the mental, energetic and intellectual fortitude that is needed to prevent things such as psychosis, schizophrenia and other psychological disorders.

Shawn.

For the skeptics this energy that we are talking about can be felt by the physical body. For some it is a prickly feeling. For others it is cold. Also meditation does include yoga and other meditations of movement. This will lead you to chakra and our energy centers. It is this control of our internal energy that allows us to break bricks and boards ect.

Exactly right. And it has been used thoughout the world and throughout history. In Oriental martial arts it is called chi or ki. In India, it is called prana, the Egyptians called it Sekhem, the Hebrews called it ruach, the Polyniseans called it mana, William Reich called it orgone. Intersting enough, most of these names also mean either "air" or "breath". That gives some indication to it's use, as will be discussed when we talk about breath control.

Might be off topic a little but I believe this is slightly cool. Crowley never taught Regardie Magic or yoga. He suggested that Regardie for a time relinquish all interests in mysticim and instead walk and work his way around the world to explore every conceivable vice.
I myself after reading this was finally able to put into words why I test my foundations with extremes such as intoxication sex pain meditation...I went out and traveled the world looking for enlightenment I hopped trains and hitched for over 3yrs all together ate from dumpsters all to get away from Babylon but I realized it takes a bit of both to make it work. For example many people get into spiritualism church w.e on a certain day it is not practiced as a life style a everyday advent now others fall into the world of Babylon worrying everyday bout bills and the physical world I think you must experience and conquer the physical world first (sex drugs ect) before you can even truely start the "magickal world"
hope that made since

As interesting of a character that Crowley was, and I do think everyone should learn about him for a number of reasons, I think that we may want to start another thread to talk about him. The only reason I suggest that is that it may take away from the purpose that Dillon started this thread for, and discussion fo Crowley always brings controversy. Of course, if Dillon doesn't mind I'll talk about Crowley all day long. :)

I think that talking about Crowley if very good for this thread. I think that a lot of people may have different views of his contributions and it would be nice to hear from someone who actually follows the Golden Dawn path. I see him as an innavator of the craft.
