Although Wikipedia may say differently, from my understanding an amulet is always protection. I can only see "luck" as being the "luck" involved in detering danger, ill intentions or misfortunes. A talisman can be for any purpose that it signifies and/or has been charged for. And a charm is either a short spoken spell, or an object that is used within the purpose of a spell.

In one of the books that I read it said that an amulet was any natural object used for protection or any other purpose designated by the caster, whereas a talisman was any man-made object used for the same or similar purposes.

Regardless, very interesting post indeed.

A police man's badge is just a star. It has no power, it doesn't stop the bad guys. It has power because you believe in it. Is that something like a talisman?

I believe you're right whiteraven though from my experience amulets can also signify aspects of a person like nobility, strength, family origins, knowledge, wisdom, and sometimes a personal desire or goal.
