I have a few questions

Ok, I have a wand, and I have done some strange stuff with and without it.... But my very important question is, are all spells recited in chants or can you say like one word and it will do something like in harry potter? For example (I know this isnt a real word but) can you point a wand at someone and say flabby wink and they will get knocked over or do you have to recite something and they will have bad luck or that kind of thing?

Harry Potter, although it would be cool, is not real magic. you could visualize and build your energy, think about the person having bad luck the pointing your wand at the person to direct the energy to them. a chant is just a way to build up energy. i have many potions that need no chant, but i usually do one because i feel it's more cerimonial that way, instead of me just making tea.

First of all, know what a spell actually is. It is a ritual wish, just like a ritual prayer. A catholic may go to the altar in church, light a candle, and say a prayer. The difference being that a prayer is asking for help from a higher power (Deity). A spell is a do-it-yourself operation. You may just say the spell; chant it; even sing it! So long as the words are your own words. That it is your own ritual wish. Not that of somebody else. Many people have cast spells without ever being aware of it. Ever blown out the candles on a cake, and then made a secret wish? You have cast a spell! Pulled a wishbone? Thrown salt over your shoulder for luck?

I've only ever done a spell with one word and it was completely on accident. I was done watching The Vampire Diaries and was listening to some of words, which I presume are in Latin. I know these are probably not real spells and saying the words really affected me more than it did anybody else. First of all, magic doesn't work in the say a bunch of funny words and it will come true way, no offense to any Harry Potter readers on the site. You have to work at it. Practice your basics, work on raising energy, and once you've learned that, and you know what magic can and cannot do. Then go and try as many spells as you want as long as they're not hurting anyone else.

To answer your question, no, not all spells are recited in chants or with one word. Some spells have no words and some spells have alot. The words in a spell just help the spell be more potent or last longer.

The chant originated with poets and bards. They had the ability to glorify the person through poetry, influencing the people's views on that person. But if someone was their enemy, or if someone dishonored them, they could write a satire, running their name through the mud, killing them socially.

The poets had so much power in this way, that even kings feared making one angry

Like the poets of old, witches sing songs and speak in rhythm and rhyme. But instead of speaking these poems out in public, the poetry is used to speak to those of the spirit world, and pull at their hearts, causing them to side with us. Within these poems or songs of a witch are included power words, such as the name of deities and other strong spirits.

But the poetry must fit the situation. You can't use iambic pentameter (sing songy) when you are banishing, reversing ill-magick, or cursing someone. It must have a harsher sound. But when blessing, for instance, such a pleasant sound is appropriate. Poetry is an art that provokes the mind and hearts of those who listen and those that speak the poetry themselves.

Single words of power do exist. For instance, abracadabra is a real power word. So are the names of angels, daemons, deities, furthark runes, certain places, etc. Such words of power are stronger when spoken in the original language. And in real magick, they are repeated, even chants are repeated. It is like the ringing of a bell, calling forth those who will aid you.

But words alone are not enough. What matters most is our goals, thoughts, emotions, and concentration when speaking them.

I would say Yes, a spell can be just one word. You can have a single word mean any series of words or whole concepts. I agree with Brysing, many persons have cast spells without ever realizing they did so.

One would think that you would have to have the emotion and focus behind that one word to make it manifest but I have seen the opposite happen. Often times a single word spoken can produce an unexpected (or maybe expected) outcome. That is why in most covens it is stressed that as you grow in knowledge you also understand the power of your words. As you become more proficient in magcik and aware you become a conscious participant in magick as you choose your words wisely to create the environment or world you desire. Or rather avoid a carelessly worded environment.

Words are the vocalizations of thoughts and thoughts are things. This concept is the whole basis for magick (and can be explained by quantum physics). If this were not the case why would anyone bother practicing magick?
