Mythical totem animals?

I have been trying to find my totem animal. I think I have but I'm not sure if it qualifies. I am frequently visited by a dragon who takes many shapes. He usually appears to me in one of the elements when all else is quiet and still. We have had long conversations and he has told me his name. I guess I'm just not sure if it qualifies since most people I know have things like wolves or frogs etc as their totem animals. What do you guys think? Can a mythical creature be a totem animal?

I think in the case of dragons, perhaps, because their mythology exists all over the world in some shape or another. Personally I believe the possibilities for different totem animals is greater now that we've learned about so many species. Like, I wouldn't expect a Native American (in say, the year 1000 or whatever) to have an elephant totem animal, or a post-modern Norwegian to have an alligator totem. Not that they couldn't come astrally to the people, but totems tended to be stuff you knew, you could identify with, and learn directly from in Nature. Now that we've made the world smaller and the Astral plane, spirituality, etc more accepted and explored, more is possible.
