Oakwood is correct because Hollywood uses something for entertainment does not mean it is not true or based on facts. I admit they change things to suit their purposes but the truth can
be easily gleaned with a little effort!

It came from Gerald Gardner. A Book of Shadows means a book of hidden knowledge. Simple--nothing flashy or ancient about it.

Before that, spell books were often called grimoires, grimories, receipts or receipt books, or just books. It depended on the tradition (ie. Ceremonial, folk magic, conjure/hoodoo, etc).
