I think a wand is used more as tool to channel energy from you. I'm still very new to magic so I may be wrong.

Try using a staff, it channels energy from you as well as from the elements around you, it can be enchanced through various means as well, a staff can truly be one of the most powerfull weapons or tool in creation if made and used right.

A wand is a very powerful object and can be made to be used in different situations.

You can make them or different woods or use crystals on them to enhance their power for use with such things as healing etc.

If you are new to magic it is probably best to learn to cast circles and spells without a wand or athame. That way you can do it anywhere at anytime. A wand or staff can be very useful, you can select certain types of woods, crystals, herbs, and whatever else you would like and would help you during workings.

Wands work for focusing energy in a spell that finds ritualistic roots. Naturally, Wands are the "fire" elemental tool out of a High magick set, So depending on what you are casting, It could hurt your spells as much as it could help them. Yew, Elder, Dogwood, Ebony, oak, and ash Are common woods for a Wand, each having it's own specialization as to what it should be used for. (Personally, I made mine with Ebony, Inlaid with Elderwood, with a Garnet set in the tip, and a Quartz crystal set in the grip)

The materials you make your wand of should be very specific to your primary type of casting, and you should put in the time to make sure that the correspondences work well with your style of casting.
