Is lucid dreaming being somewhat conscious while you are dreaming or is it the ability to manipulate your dreams and shape them while unconscious?

Also, what are some method to help increase your ability to lucid dream? Would meditation be the best way to go about it or should I try to write the dreams I remember in a booklet?
