Information on Sigils

I have heard much about sigil magick, and I am intrigued. What is their potential? How can one create a sigil? How long would it take to manifest? Please, if anybody is expereinced with sigils and can tell me all they know, I would be very grateful. I am asking as a fellow human and as a student.

The word sigil means a seal or device (like a personal seal, a printer's mark, etc.), but the word today usually denotes a magical sigil, a glyph used in ritual or sympathetic magick as a focus, or for summoning angels, demons, or spirits. Sigils as the signature of 'mark' of a spirit began in antiquity and reached a peak of popularity in during the Renaissance. The seal or signature of an angel, spirit, or demon was thought to contain the essence of that being's name, and give one power to summon that entity.

There are several methods of devising sigils for this use, usually involving special arrangements (planetary squares, Enochian tables, etc.) of letters or numbers, and tracing the desired word over this pattern to reveal a symbol (the detailed center of the Golden Dawn Cross is such a pattern), or reducing alphabetical characters into a single glyph. Sorry I don't know much about the origin of sigil magic.

There are also signs of sigil in the lesser key of solomon.

sigil magick is just wonderful and really really works.

First you must KNOW what you want - really know what you want.
Second you must state what you want, say it out loud.
then you write it down in a simple sentence.
Now you must take all the vowels out of the sentence:
example I want to be happy ends up wnttbhppy. Then you can further shorten it by taking out any letters that appear twice:
wnbhy
Then you make your sigil You fit all the letters into a box mix them up and put them however they fit. You can use any language even runes to write the final sigil.

One point is that the sigil is nothing like the original statement it must look very different but contains the meaning and energy.

Well.. you could just search Google ;).... yeah it works though.. it really does... you write your intentions, go over it and omit repeating letters, leaving the first appearing letter.. that is your simplified intent... then you draw the momograph/sigil without it consciously reminding you of your intent... then you charge the sigil by meditating, sexual magick, etc... you burn the sigil and then you forget it, and it shall manifest.

This makes a lot of things stir in my head, and I like the responses you've got so far. Sigils are used a lot in high magick. Allie mentioned the lesser key of solomon, which really strikes a cord with me. The church of hermetic science even goes so far as to offer video on just this. I think it's even the title of the video. As well as a video called "the rites of magick" which actually gives you a decent look at some of their rituals.
Upon reading this I also thought about one of the times Crowley(huge fan) mentions sigil work, in which he wished to summon a demon. To do so he crucified a frog upside down, declaring it a willing familiar, and placed some of the blood in the center of whichever sigil he was working with. To attract the demon. Bait?
At any rate there a few views on sigil magick, and you've got some good responses, which, of course, is awesome. Somehow I think you should talk to Kao about sigilisation. He usually has good ideas, and I love his views on this particular subject.

i have simple way i use,it works for sure.

0: cleanse,banish by any means you see fit

1 find something to draw upon(no need to be picky,as long you can carry,destroy it)

2 draw in symbolic meaning what you want.

3charge,visualize,aknowledge,use yours will,wish it,empower by emotions,focus upon it.

4 finish and put it somewhere safe

5banish,cleanse by any means you see fit

The only potencial is yourself,luck,destiny and eris ;)

Sigil can be created from anything,that way it is called chaos magick.You chose what you want,you make rules.

To create a sigil one first writes out your statementof intent eg. i will manifest true power. You then remove all the double and tripple letters eg. iwlmanfestrupow.
Now comes the actual creation, you take two pieces of paper, one you will plan on and one which will be the end result, you take all the letters you have left and mix them around so they form a picture, now there are a couple of imporant tricks to remember when making the sigil, when you create the sigil you must intensely visualize the end result, this helps charge the sigil, then, the actual sigil must look NOTHING like the original desire, in effect you are hiding the intent in a picture so that your concious mind can't touch it and only your subconcious mind can get to work on it. Once you have created your first test sigil redo it on the new piece of paper, this time modify it even more if you want to help hide the original intent, make it as beautifull as you want, the more energy you put in the stronger it is.
Now you can charge it further by drawing in universal, elemental, or free energy, you draw it into you and visualize it flowing into the sigil untill it almost stands out like a 3 dimensional image, the sigil is now ready to be burnt into the subconcious with gnosis, now this is one of the most IMPORTANT parts of sigilisation, the actual gnosis.
Gnosis is a state in which your normal working mind is thrown into such turmoil that it kinda shuts down momentarily and you have direct access into the subconcious, it can be achieved through various manners, sexual intercourse, pain, pleasure, fear, meditation till the mind is completely empty, but for now let's work on the easiest method- pain.
After you have created the sigil sit comfortably with a lit candle in front of you, now focus on the sigil in your hand, don't focus on the intent anymore, don't think of the result, only look at the sigil as a random picture with no true meaning attached, focus on it for about 5 minutes, then quickly burn your hand on the candle, i don't mean burn the flesh off, just a quick burn to generate a bit of pain, what happens is your mind more or less takes a snap shot of the sigil and it is sent directly to the subconcious. You then take the sigil and burn it in the candle, now here is another very important part, you must banish the idea of the sigil, you cannot think of it once you have released it or else you are actually blocking it from manifesting, the easiest way to banish it is with laughter, true heartfelt laughter that clears the mind of all other thoughts, for me the easiest thing to laugh about is the fact that i burnt my hand on the candle like an idiot ;) This is sigilisation in a nutshell, it's potential is limitless, it is one of the cornerstones of Chaos Magick, and trust me when i say that the crede is true, nothing is real everything is permitted, a chaote isn't limited by reality, he creates his own.
