I would recomend studying what interests you. Though the basics are certainly not universal I find them widely useful. These are thought to be, grounding, centering, and meditation. I would also inlude visulization and having a good understanding of what is real and what is fake. Magick in general is such a broad subject. It can be done in any religion, it can be done with no religion at all. Your worldview might dictate what you do and don't do. Some legitimate books I would suggest are ones by Scott Cunningham, Donald Michael Kraig, and so forth. You can easily google many books you cannot afford and find them as pdfs where you can read them for free.
