Well, the mind is like a muscle, and needs to be worked and exercised for it to be stronger.
Meditation is not always sitting with your finger tips touching and humming "ommmmmm" to yourself. It is a mental focus exercise and directs your mind and mental energies.
For me, practicing massage therapy is a good meditation exercise. That or tai chi. Even a 2 minute sitting meditation can be excellent!
Outside of meditations, I mean, you've got scrabble, chess, rubics cubes and various other puzzles, learning a new language, art, they are all exercises to learn something new or problem solving.
There is no easy way out, sorry! :p
