Books are a good place to start, but some are very specific to an aspect of the craft, so it is always good to start with free resources.

It's a good idea to start with what nordstar has suggested, then you can always ahve a look at the Starting Out and Basics Expanded forums on this site before moving on to books.

For starters you could learn how to raise energy related to your intentions, learn how to ground and center yourself, mediation and improve your visualising skills. I guess you could try simple candle spells that have a chant and after everything gets over you can let the candle burn itself out. That would be good for starters and that's how I started. You could also go for simple paper buring spells after when it's over you simply toss the ashes into the air.
Good luck with your first attempt!!!

To do any form of spell or magickal working, you need a basis of knowledge, hence the links to forum posts.

Candle spells are easy to start as a beginner. You just choose a candle corresponding to your goal. For example you wish to attract love ( not on a specific person , a general one) you would choose a pink candle which represents romantic love. You would then cleanse your candle by incense fumes or any other way and then charge it with your intention. You could carve symbols which according to you means love. Light the candle and focus on your goal. Imagine yourself filked in a pink ball. If you aren't that good at visualizing then just think about your intention while the flame is burning bright. You could also create a chant and say it 3/7/9/13 times or whatever times you want to. Let the candle burn itself out or snuff out the candle repeat it for a week or so and then bury the residue
Hope this helped you

Beginners should not even cast till they have a decent foundation of knowledge, this is because there are not real spells for "beginners", all spells require at least some knowledge on the topic.

This is why we generally point beginners to the basics (these vary from person to person): meditation, centering, grounding, visualization, fantasy vs reality.

Understanding the basics will give you a good foundation of knowledge, on which you can build on and cast.

Well, if you're serious about learning how to do magic and with starting from the rock-bottom then you don't start out by casting spells, you start out by learning how and why magic works.

You see, there is no such thing as an "easy" spell or a "beginner" spell. One either understands how magic works and has mastered the basics...in which case the magic will work..or you haven't done that sort of work..and no spell will work no matter how "easy" it seems.

Casting a successful spell involves much more than finding some spell on the internet or in a book, saying some words, lighting a candle, waving a wand of any of that sort of thing. In order for magic to work you need to understand how and why it works in the first place. Grounding and centering, visualization, focus and intent, energy manipulation, etc are all necessary first steps to even begin to have a chance at a spell actually working...and more importantly to prevent a spell from back-firing on you.

So, my advice for anyone who is truly serious is to start by reading a few books and practicing the exercises those books will give you. Once you have mastered the basics you won't need anyone to give you spells, you'll be able to create your own spells that will be far more effective than anything you find on the net. Here's the books I suggest:

"Before You Cast a Spell" by Carl McColman

"Spells and How They Work" by Janet and Stewart Farrar

"The Veil's Edge" by Willow Polson

"Modern Magick" by Donald Michael Kraig
