Iwouldnt say its impossible but it is near it.the astral plain is more of a world that is based on energy, and energy and matter can convert to each other so if you have the ability to do it everything is fine until the place where the dragons come in;they are extremely cuatious of humans and even your dragon guid/guardian wont give his/her true name to you even if it has been with you for all his/her life.

There are some different takes on familiars (familiar spirits). It is my belief that they are always only ever non-physical, though some will insist they have a physical familiar -- typically a family pet.

Some will also describe a familiar spirit in a very similar way -- leading to some mixing up of definitions -- with a spirit animal or a guide.

The concept of a familiar spirit is strongly attached to European folk beliefs, and are believed to be a spiritual creature (typically an animal, though sometimes they are depicted as imp spirits, and more) which helps with magical practice. Some will use it to help direct energy, to intercept incoming energy, or to protect from negative energy. Some will use them to store extra energy to apply with the main intent of the session, or to help with recovery. The purposes can be quite broad.

As far as how to 'get' a familiar -- whether one is summoned or comes to you -- is a matter of some debate. Some will say to meditate with the intent of meeting one's familiar (similar to meeting a spirit guide), while others will describe close to creation rituals, similar to formalized thought forms, and others say that a familiar will come when it is needed or the practitioner is ready.

One thing, though: A familiar requires attention. It behaves in some ways that people have described a Tulpa, except it is not believed to be born of the witch's energy nor an extension of the personality (or new personality created). It is its own being, a spirit from that realm or plain. However, as stated earlier, they require attention. They need to be included in meditation, in spell-casting, in rituals, and even some in daily life according to some people's accounts.

Ignoring, neglecting, or mistreating a familiar can possibly lead to its departure, or even a return of some negativity.

The idea of a witch's "familiar" grew out of the infamous "witch trials". Whenever something went wrong in the village, the priest (Catholic) would say that it was not the work of God; the village must have a witch living there!
Any old woman living alone, who had a pet animal, was accused of being a witch.Especially if she had a cat!
"I have seen her turn into a cat. I visited the cottage and the cat was there, and it spatted and snarled at me. And there was no witch. And other times I seen the witch and there was no cat anywhere."
That is a direct quote from a witch trial in England. She must be a witch; she has a "familiar".The idea has grown over the centuries, so that now, anybody can have "a familiar"; real or spiritual.
So, of course, you may believe in "familiars" if you wish. You may believe in anything! If you wish.

i've heard a few definitions of familiars. personally it's a deep spiritual bond between you and an animal, but not everyone believes that.

as Brysing mentioned it's based off historical propaganda against witches, believing they could shapeshift and/or tell the animal to spy on good Christians [see Maleficents bird in Sleeping Beauty... the cartoon] today people either see familiars as animals you share a close spiritual bond with who can help you in spells and whatnot [author Deborah Blake has 4 cats, and only one can sense where a circle has been cast, the other three need to but but in another room when her coven is over so they don't break circle] or it's energy in animal form [or you pooled your own energy into an animal to use later] third option i read in To Walk a Pagan Path, is to train your animal to behave like a familiar. [train it to sit quietly while meditation, join you in circle, participate in ceremonies] granted it's a learned trick/skill, but if what you're hoping for is your cat to sit purring on your lap while you meditate, you could do it, just understand your animal as well, sometimes they want to play when you want to cast spells.

regarding spells to make familiars, while i don't believe they work, depending on the spell you could try it and see for yourself. if it's the energy method, it's basically making a psi ball, you're pooling energy into something you can use later.

Allison, if you had read through the earlier posts in this thread you would have seen that your spells did not and will not work is because they are total fantasy. Dragons do not exist in the physical world and therefore you cannot find dragon eggs or summon a physical dragon.
