My advice is to read what you can and use common sense to weed out things that are "too good to be true". Use resources that you have available to you as much as possible. There are forums here, and articles that are wrote on magic and many other websites out there that are waiting to be explored.

Most people that will come up to you and say they will teach you won't teach you as much as you can yourself. And the people that do teach like to do so to fuel a ego that makes them feel "special" about themselves. I can't really say I have seen many people on here that offer up teaching people that are reputable by any means.

Good luck.

Welcome to SoM!
One of the things you need to keep in mind when looking for a teacher is to find someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Unfortunately, as with every site like this, you have people who are doused with the Hollywood misconception of magic and seek to press their own personal delusions of grandeur on other people. There are plenty of people willing to teach, but finding a GOOD teacher will not be an easy task.
If you are just looking for a finger in the right direction, I would advise that you find resource materials on meditation and start there. It seems anti-climatic and drab, but meditation is one of the key skills that anyone who aspires to learn magic must first master. If you have questions, feel free to mail me. I am not teaching anyone right now nor do I plan on it, but I am always willing to give advise where it is warranted.
