Poke around the forums and see what takes your interest so you can delve further into those subjects. Keep some sense about you with what is real and what is not (beyond anything that breaks the laws of physics not being real, it is up to you to decide whether or not you believe in a particular thing). Here are my typical tips for beginners.

  • Don't cast something too specific or vague. It either severely restricts the working or does not give it enough focus to be effective.
  • Try to make sure you have an understanding of how a spell could work. Many people will tell you that "the best spells are ones made by yourself", but that's really only true because you are forced to have an understanding of the components and how they work. It is entirely okay for something made by someone else to work for you as well as being able to adapt something to tune into "you" more (except in cases of strictly following tradition).
  • Keep in mind that there are way more types of spiritual and magical work than just spells. There are also things like altered states, rituals, projection of consciousness/spirit, honoring the land, working with spirits or deities, divination, subtle body work, directing energy, and tons more things.
  • Most everything you see will be things you have to take with a grain of salt. Different things work better for different people, so research, trial, and error will be your friends. In addition, it's best if you validate your sources and cross reference them unless you are unable to (personal experience isn't something you can really validate from other people, but there are some experiences that people share).
  • Don't be discouraged if you feel you don't practice or study enough or if you've hit a snag in your path. We all go through rough patches (even more seasoned practitioners) and we all deal with them differently. Most importantly, do not let others invalidate you. It is good to keep your mind open and learn new things (very good), but there will always be people who disagree with you and not everyone will be nice about it. You do best for you, follow your instinct, and you'll be good to go.

Welcome to Spells of Magic, I would suggest reading "The Basics: Expanded" or "Starting Out", which are located in the General Information section of the forums.

Hi I am still new too. So I will tell you what has been working best for me. Practice makes perfect. Read and practice what you read then try some new things that seem to make since to you in order to bring in your own personal touch into your spells. My experience has been from talking to others and reading is that everyone is a bit different and most believe that astrology plays a part in spell casting. Its good to know who you are astrologically(your birth sign) and to be familiar with the moon cycles(Quaters) and elements(Earth Air Fire Water Akasha). Also it may be best for you to have some knowledge of crystals and herbs. There are books for sale in the SOM Store on this website or just look the information up in the articles here or online then find a good place preferably outdoors alone and practice.
