Sometimes casting a circle is advised during spell craft. This belief stems from many paths from all across the board, and it is a good one! It is not a required thing to do for any spell work, but it is a very good thing to do!

When casting a circle, you are raising and maintaining energies within an area that aid in your workings. A circle can be a powerful tool for a solitary practitioner and a group, helping everyone to synchronize energy.

The use of a circle is to contain the energies being used in your working, some people prefer to use the free flow of energy. I've seen a number of people who only use circles if they have a lot to do, or are working on something that is large and time consuming. Some spells require moving away from the casting area to complete the intent, so casting a circle for one those might cause problems.
Just think about your personal path, preference, and whatever magick you happen to be doing.
