Some suggest that when just starting to practice magick, one does not attempt to cast a spell until a year of practicing basic forms of magic, and components of a spell. Whether or not you want to do this is obviously your decision. The mechanics of a spell could be the tools used, being able to concentrate, meditate, focus intent, etc. I think this method teaches patience and gives you time to learn instead of mindlessly taking action.
I do not practice spellcasting heavily, I study many forms of magic on a daily basis, sometimes applying the knowledge, sometimes simply memorizing it for later use. It is good to teach yourself patience and discipline. I suggest studying a bit more on topics you are interested in pertaining to spellcasting, and practicing some of the components involved in the average ritual/spell first.
As another commenter has said visualization is good. I would recommend practicing that as well at this time.
