I don't think that, in themselves, ouija boards are necessarily a bad thing. It looks like they've built up a terrible reputation because they tend to be used by hysterical and inexperienced young people. Any form of spirit communication is potentially dangerous in the hands of unprepared practitioners.
However much a person is told that these devices have a potential for danger, people will still go ahead. For goodness sake, don't do it if you are already scared!
So, before you work with (not play with) your board, do yourself a favour and educate yourself a bit. You need to know how to banish a spirit if things do go wrong. You need to know how to use adequate protection. You need to be able to stay calm, positive, and focused, and to have the ability to maturely deal with an unexpected scenario.
In short, it would be advisable that you learn some basics of magick before you try. That way, you will have a better quality experience without putting yourself in danger.
