First of all, they don't have to rhyme, however the ones that rhyme work best. You see, most magick would be nothing without your subconcious will and for some reason spells that rhyme are able to tap into it better than say a spell that didn't rhyme at all. So, it's usually suggested that they do, especially if you're new to spellcasting and magick since your magickal power is less. One of the things I always suggest for spellwriting is that you are VERY specific, if you're not not it could have some very bad consequences, whether it backfires or not.
In terms of words, I tend to lean towards old fashioned poetic lingo, however this is not required. Aslong as it has words, and will, it could be spell. You can make up spells on the spot actually, however it's a bit risky, because again you might say the wrong thing and end up with a result different than the one you wanted. Most spell casters tend to check, check, and double check their spells before performing them, this may be wise in truth.
In terms of other tips: write from the heart, and have fun!
Good luck on your future spell writing.
