Sounds like one of the Fae. They're not all pretty with wings, you know.

I call these guys "Mud Fae" or "Dark Fae". I met Them when I was clearing out negativity in my sister's house (long story short--she accidentally created what she considered a "demon", and shit attracts flies, so I was chasing these little shadow things out of the house that were driving her and her kids bonkers--and little guys like you described showed up to help me).

Leave Them some milk, and home made wheat bread with honey drizzled on it. They're good to have around as They are protective.

"Haints" is a mispronunciation of the word "Haunts" and is a common tern in the Appalachian Mountain dialect for all those things that go bump in the night.
