I need to take a look at this coven.

No, traditional necromancy is both of what you described, Drakken. Modern necromancy should be the same, the two terms should not be mixed I think. Stereotypical necromancy would be the counterpart of traditional necromancy, that being "raise the dead" and all that. "Command spirits," "summon spirits," "control spirits" and other (pardon this abbreviation)BS like that.

Necromancy is about respecting spirits. If you attempt to command, summon(assuming you do so as if you tell them when and where to go), or control them in any you are much less likely to receive any results at all.
