In high school I had a girl that wasn't a big fan of me or my pagan religious beliefs. Most times I just ignored her hateful comments and didn't spend much time around her (our school only had about 100 students per grade so it wasn't always possible) so I wouldn't have to hear them. I was also openly bisexual which she hated. She was (and probably still is) a very devout Christian woman. Unlike the other 2 Wiccan students in the school I never participated in any conversation that bashed any other religion.

After joining the Gay-Strait Alliance of the school I was often staying at school as late as 6:30 pm. The teacher running it didn't start the meetings until 3:30 pm (school ended at 2:15) so the GLBT students in the GSA weren't harassed and wouldn't be heard discussing their sexuality with other students. It was on these late nights that I started having problems with this girl. Some of the meetings would end by 4:30 and she didn't leave until 5 most nights. On several of these occasions she threw a bible at me (hitting me with it most of the time) while I was in the student parking lot while demanding that I find the one true God and worship him. One night one of the vice principles (the school was special and had 2) saw her do it and grabbed us both before we went home.

She made us wait in her empty office while she went to check the security cameras had caught it (they had). She wanted to both suspend the girl and call the police to have her charged with something on my count after it had been said that this happened on more than one occasion. I managed to get her out of any legal responsibility with the police (she hadn't really done any harm by hitting me with said bible) but still earned the suspension when she refused to stop throwing the bibles at me. Her defense for it being okay was her religion stated that it was her responsibility to save my soul.

Should a religious text ever be considered a defense for doing an illegal action against another person?
