You will need the following items for this spell:

First chant to have the elements aid your spell
"Wind, earth, fire, water, I call to you to make this spell magic so mote it be."

Next the protection spell (chant three times, before saying so mote it be)
"Power of light, protect (Full name of intended target, first and last name)from all plight, may the strength of stone be in (name of intended, only first name needed for this part)bone, may (he/she) be safe from all who would harm, be it mundane or by charm. So mote it be.

(once chanted three times it is always best to bind your spell)
"For the good of all and to harm none, this spell is bound and is to not be undone, by the power of three times three, as I do will, so mote it be"
(give thanks to the elements and to the higher powers for helping and don't forget to say farewell).

does it work immediately?

How do I know this worked? I have performed spells before but this one I feel like worked but if I re do it - is that okay?

Of course you can cast the spell again at any time you feel you will want to use it. Protection spells can be more difficult than others to know if they've worked, though there are others too which have been rather obvious for me. Personally I'd say if you feel like it worked, it is likely it did.
