Ouija Boards
By:
Hello. Samhain (Or Halloween, whichever you prefer) is on the way and coming soon, so I want to use a Ouija Board to celebrate. My parents know about my attraction (more like obsession) with spirits, so they won't think much about me using a Ouija Board. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with stuff like this, and how to increase the chances of success. I know how to magickally protect myself, and know the rules of the game. But I was wondering if you have any tips on making it more likely to work. Any stories of what happened if you ever used a Ouija board would be appreciated as well. I can't use candles, just so you know.

Also, I can't really buy a Ouija Board, so I was thinking to make my own. Would a homemade paper one work? Are there any particular symbols I would have to draw or paint or anything?

You can absolutely make your own! Spirit boards have been in use for centuries in many different cultures.

As for the name Oiuja Board, it's the one created for the concept when it became a board game of sorts. It's "yes" in both French and German, and used solely as a marketing tool. It sort of became sononymous with the concept, and some people think the idea began with the trademark. I'll reassure you it did not.

To answer wether you can make your own, the answer is a resounding yes! There have been simple and complex boards used for ages. Some people made somewhat smaller ones, and used a simple ring as a planchette, for example. It doesn't have to be fancy or formal by any means.

But consistent advice is to place wards or protections ahead of time, banish and cleanse after. Have a way to say goodbye quickly and dismiss any unwanted responders.

Hi there friend.

If you are strong enough, you will not need any sort of protection to protect you from evil spirits if you do use the ouija board.

Mental protection is for the weak. From the weak, the story does not last long.

When you use a ouija board, you will open a spiritual door that invites spirits from another dimension.

These spirits can be good, or bad. Some can even be a bit playful and try to mess with your brain by doing funky stuff, try to scare you.

Anyways.

Do not do anything on Halloween as you will surely invite evil spirits to your ends.

And this can have drastic karmic consequences. During Halloween the doors of the umbral (what christians call the purgatory, in latin, purgatorium) are open. Which means there will be a high level of spiritual activity during that time and you can get hurt.

My advice is to do this on a normal ocasion, just to have a bit of fun. Doing it on Halloween is gambling with your life, literally.

I hope you follow my advice and acquire some knowledge from me.

All good to you, blessings!

You can certainly create your own spirit board. Generally such a board would portray the letters of the alphabet so that answers can be spelled out for you. The words "yes" and "no" are also generally used so that simple questions can be answered without having to spell everything out.

Spirit boards or Ouija boards function by inviting a spirit to communicate with you. It works best if there are two people at the board to hold the planchette. If you do it just by yourself you might create a situation where you are answering the questions and not the spirit you invite.

Personally I always use the board within a cast circle where I can keep out any baneful spirits while I am working. Using protection is not a sign of weakness, it is common sense. Would you invite a random stranger into your house without having some assurance they do not mean you harm? And I generally call upon a specific spirit, such as that of a loved one, rather than just any spirit attracted to the board. The circle lets you do this by keeping out any spirit not specifically called to be present. And the spirit of a loved one or ancestor is more likely to give you an accurate reading.

Halloween (or Samhain) is considered to be a time when the veil between the worlds is thinnest and the spirits of the dead mingle with the living. Deceased friends and family may be closest to you then, so reaching them through the board might be easier than at other times of the year. But I would again suggest that, since so many spirits are active, you do your reading within a cast circle or with another form of protection. There are stones such as Labaradorite, Black Tourmaline, Jet, Black Obsidian and others which could be worn as a form of protection.

Ouija boards?! That's my kind of topic! *wrings hands together*

I've worked with ouija boards for years, they're not as scary as people think, but they're like any tool, you need to treat them like a tool and not a toy [thank you Hasbro] Anyway, regarding your questions:

Yes, you can buy a ouija board [the first one I bought was 13$ in 2005 so rather cheap. Don't like that it glows in the dark, but it does its job] You can make a paper one, but I would try making a more permanent board out of wood. [or, at least, get some cardboard] If you're going with a paper one, I would cleanse the tools [paper, pen, whatever you're using as a planchette] I would then cast a circle and make the board, focusing on your intention, then bless the board once done. When you're not using the board, store it in a safe place so it doesn't get damaged. If you wish to get rid of it, I suggest cleansing it, then burning it in a fire made with cleansing/protective herbs and wood.

If you wish to make a more permanent board, be mindful of the wood you're using as the type of wood can have a certain energy to it. You can paint symbols of protection that resonate with you on the board, as well as the alphabet, numbers 0-9, yes, no, and goodbye. [and anything else you feel you need, like "maybe"] As with the paper one, cleanse and charge the tools you're using, make it while focusing on your intention, then bless the board when done.

If you're simply buying the board, cleanse it [because the energy of everyone who touched it at the store is still on it] then charge it with your energy, bless it, and store it in a safe place when not in use.

As for use, cast a circle and meditate before using so you're in the right state of mind. I would also recommend having two other people there [that you can trust] because I find it easier to be blindfolded or have my eyes closed while using, so you'll need someone/something to record the session for you. [I also tend to have two people working the planchette and one records, hence three total, because two people add energy and can hold it easily] also, don't put your fingers heavily on the planchette, just gently, barely hovering over it [you should feel a pull like two magnets when you're communicating] Be polite and respectful, and when the spirit is ready to leave, thank them and say goodbye. [the goodbye is important, otherwise, the spirit might linger] if it refuses to say goodbye, force the planchette to the goodbye and cleanse. The circle will protect you from any harmful spirits, but sometimes a spirit won't take "goodbye" for an answer and stay [it's happened to me once or twice] I usually tell them they can stay until morning, then they have to leave. If they insist on staying longer, a quick cleansing gets rid of them [if you don't have sage, ring a bell, or spray saltwater around the house, this will get rid of the spirit, then sprinkle salt across the doors and windows to keep it from coming back inside] Also, you don't need candles, it just sets the mood.

As for personal stories, most were rather uneventful. Older users might remember my spirit friend Rori. He loved the ouija board as he could feed off our energy when using it, so he usually bullied other spirits to ensure he was the only one using it. Sometimes he would have the planchette go in circles so fast it flew off the board for fun [or when he refused to answer a question] but we dealt with Rori, so we had none of it and would pack up and be done with it [then he would apologize and be serious] We spoke with one spirit who kept going to "D" for the majority of their questions and eventually my one friend go frustrated and threatened the spirit. The planchette stopped dead [it was sliding fine then it was like we ran into glue] The spirit followed my friend, giving her bad luck until she apologized. [so, the moral is, don't do that] Overall, I enjoy ouija boards, but I find better results with pendulums when talking with spirits [granted, I'm able to hear spirits, so I usually just have a conversation with them, but pendulums are easier and quicker to use]
