I have learned that prior to casting a spell, there are steps to take. These are the steps I have learned: Find, or write, a spell. Determine timing (moon phases etc), gather tools and materials, prepare your space, and lastly--take a purification bath. Then to alter your state of mine, link your intent, state your intent and many other things that are involved in casting a spell.
I understand most of those are a must, but when performing spells that aren't as detailed or 'complex' as others, like a smaller, less detailed spell, is it necessary to take a purification bath etc etc?
To those that are well versed in the world of magick, what is your take on following each detailed, meticulous step that is involved in casting spells, or anything to do with magick?
There is no correct or incorrect way to cast a spell. I have met many practitioners that don't even say the spell out loud or have an alter. You will develop your method for casting that will amplify your intent and purpose of your spell. The purification bath might be a good idea if you are concerned about carrying negative energy with you into your spell casting.
Some people believe strongly in casting a spell circle for protection and others do not feel the need to do this. It comes down to what you are comfortable doing. Personally, I always start my castings by giving thanks to the four elements I work with and the gods, goddesses or entities of each direction (north, south, east and west) Some don't even recognize the elements because it is not what they work with.
If you feel you are grounded enough and don't have negative energy than I would say it is safe to say you do not need to take a purification bath each time you want to cast. Others might disagree but again, it really comes down to your intent. That is why writing your own spells is, to me, more powerful than reciting someone else's. If you use candles, crystals or herbs (like I do) you can research each one and their properties and use what is necessary in your spell for affirmation.
