Do you have to do magic to talk to spirits? Can you do it without spells or is there something special you have to do to talk to them? I wanna contact my grandma. I miss her a lot but dont know how to do it. And can you talk to pets that you've lost or is it just people??

While magic and spiritwork can go hand in hand, you do not need to practice one to practice the other. So no, you do not need spells to work with spirits. They can be contacted through the means of invocation and prayer, but it is not something that should be attempted by the inexperienced.

Ancestral spirits and the spirits of lost pets can be contact by setting up an altar in their honor. On this altar you can place photos of them, items that were special or significant to them in some way, etc. Candles and incense can be used and offerings left. Call out to them. Speak to them. Act as if they are still with you and eventually they will appear. This can be in subtle ways or in very profound. Just take your time and be patient.

I would also suggest you look into methods of shielding and protection. Other spirits can appear to us in times of grief or distress, when we are trying to reach out and connect with lost loved ones, and not all of those spirits are beneficial or have our best interests in mind.

Ok I have pics of my grandma and a locket she used to own. Can I use my cats collar for his altar? Would that be ok? I have a couple pics of him that I could use. What would I use for him? Could I use cat treats that he liked?

You could potentially use anything which is a connection to your loved ones. For example, there are people who don't drink, but buy their dearly departed's favorite liquor for an ancestor altar. Some people will cook food, or leave out a pack of the person's favorite cigarettes. For pets, I think the collar could be useful, and the treats would probably work well.

Something I'm not sure you may have considered: Please don't expect to literally see or hear your loved ones. You may have an emotional response, however, such as a feeling of peace or love, which is the same as you experienced when you were physically with your grandma. It's like that special warmth. You might get some ideas or thoughts, feelings or symbolic responses. Everyone's experience varies. Some people who work with their ancestors start to dream about them. Your own experience will vary.
