Usually before people cast spells they are recommended to build their foundation upon which they will perform their workings.
What people consider to be The Basics may vary from practitioner to practitioner, but I consider them to be Meditation, Visualization, Grounding, Methods of Shielding, Energy and Breath Work.

The basics are pretty simple, but they differ for everyone. Basics can include Meditation, Visualization, Grounding, Centering, Circle Casting, Energy Working.
