There is nothing whatsoever bad about Wicca. It is a beautiful religion that teaches respect, personal responsibility, caring for the planet, and other beneficial things.

Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about Wicca and there are certain groups who lie about what Wiccans believe and what they do. I suspect that these lies are what your friend's Mom has been listening to and what she believes.

Ignorance breeds ignorance. She simply doesn't understand the actual religion as all the above posters have stated

Back when I was interested in Wicca, my mother disapproved of it because she had a bad experience with a woman who claimed to be Wiccan in her office; this woman preached like no other gave herself and her claimed religion a bad name. It wasn't until I started explaining to my mother what exactly Wicca is and isn't that she started to understand that there wasn't an inherent problem with it.

There are also plenty of "Wiccan/Pagan turned Christian" documentaries that try to act like horror stories where these people either genuinely were in a bad group (which is not always the case) or they blow it up to something it wasn't to falsely gain attention and "sympathy".

Simply put, your mother won't understand until you help her understand how you see and learn things.

this is a perfect reason why I think Wicca should be taught in schools in RE classes since it is a very misunderstood and represented religion. I know that some schools in England teach about the neo-druids ( I hope I am phrasing that right).

My mother had a friend who claimed to have previously been the head of a coven. She said she had been a witch, but I don't know whether she was Wiccan specifically.

She made all sorts of ridiculous claims, and scared the snot out of a lot of people who knew nothing outside their Christian upbringing (not bashing Christians here; it's just how it was).

She made a lot of claims that seemed to be no more than (what would on this forum be considered) fluff. And she always refused to elaborate.

She claimed to have controlled the weather, creating or dissolving tornadoes, as she called it.

She claimed the Bible calls Owls a "cursed" bird of the night, and that they really are eyes for "Satan himself!" Oh nose! But when I asked her where the Bible mentioned Owls since I was unable to find it and wanted to learn more, she refused to answer.

I could go on about things she claimed which could literally not happen, and some years later I realized she maybe got caught up in other things, and bought into the whole trying to scare good Christians out of going another way.

There are a lot of people who believe that literally impossible things are done by Wiccans, pagans, and other religions.

For instance, the rumor that Satanists (yes, the LaVeyan type) sacrifice children on Hallowe'en is propagated widely as a means to scare people away from not only exploring other religions but also from celebrating All Hallows' Eve.

Yes, I do know the Scott Cunningham book It's called "The Truth About Witchcraft"

But there is a better book that I might recommend called "When Someone You Love is Wiccan" by Carl McColman.
