Memshearts, even during the time when iron was first discovered, railings were not put around graves. That only began to be a practise in the 18th century. The railings were not to keep out "spirits", but to keep out grave robbers from important graves! At that time, the railings were quite high, with a locked gate!
By the way, all modern bricks have iron; no matter what the colour. The most iron is in blue bricks; they are waterproof. But they are extremely hard. You wouldn't get dust from them!

Brick dust can be made from any type of red brick, however, "stronger" brick dust can be made by crushing bricks from old mausoleums, courthouses, graves, or any other place of power. Now I'm not saying go steal bricks, haha. Also, before you lay brick dust around the home, do a cleansing in your home. The brick dust keeps things out, but it also keeps things in.

this topic. Are there certain guidelines to putting
to making your own mix for red brick dust with
the herbs that one would have already have on
hand?

There isn't really a formula. Brick dust is brick dust. I guess you could add powdered herbs of protection to it. Try looking some up!

Red brick dust does not have to come from any specific set of bricks, it isn't hard to figure out. The most common method is basically smashing a red brick with a hammer until sufficient dust is obtained, there is no special method for it. Red brick dust is used greatly in Hoodoo for protection; it is said that when one lines the doors and window sills with the item, it will keep away intruders or anyone that wishes to harm you cannot pass into your home. When someone throws a trick or a working in front of your yard or home, sprinkling red brick dust will break the hex and send it back to the worker that threw it. Also, it is a great property to have in a Mojo Hand or Gris Gris for protecting yourself. Of course, you may also add mixed herbs and such to strengthen the property of the red brick dust. You can also use it for floor washes, cleaning the home and warding of evil by doing so. The uses of red brick dust are countless when it comes to warding off enemies and protecting one from curses and hexes.
