Theban Script

When and how did the Theban alphabet come about? It's almost similar to runes in the script, just super curvy. There's a chart of it in Silver RavenWolf's Teen Witch, some places on the internet refer to it as a Witch's alphabet, someone posted a chart of it on Pinterest under Wiccan and magical stuff... I was just suddenly curious now as to how it came about, why it's used, etc. and since i was in the forums I decided to ask here instead of searching through google links.

It used to be extremely illegal to practice witchcraft so theban was used to write with so that magical writings could be kept secret. I believe the first recorded documentation of it is from the renaissance period, probably due to the invention off the printing press but three runes are rumored to be much older. No one really knows where they originated.

Its not hard to learn. I use it in my book of shadows.

Runes are the alphebts of the Germanic peoples, so yes, they are far older.

The Theban script first pops up in the early 1500's. Most sources cite Aggripa, though some cite Trithemius and many mention the reputed author Honorius of Thebes.

Theban script came to life in the 18th century. However this script is known as the witches language as many knew about it, used it, and taught it, also writing with it to keep there knowledge, and religion secret.

Remember we don't always have the freedom we do in our country, also we never had this much freedom.

It's description as "Witch's Script" and such is mostly popularized through modern Wicca. Before that it was mostly just a (simple) cipher.

Are you required to learn latin to learn Theban script?

No, its not a language. Just a script.
