A wand is an amplifier for your spells.

In my, admittedly limited, experience wands only amplify your power but are not necessary for magick. They are useful for rituals and more complex spells but their utility is really up to you. As far as I know, wands do not contain spells, they are just an instrument used in the casting of spells.

A wand is just a tool, like any other.
If you think a wand will help you, then make one or buy one.
I have never had one, neither did my witch teacher.

I have a 14 inch wooden african mini staff that is carved and has a brass handle. I purchased it while I was in the service in Somalia in 1993. I'm hoping I can convert it into a wand. Any suggestions?

You don't even really need to use a wand. You could just point your finger as long as you focus, have intent and believe in your objective.
