Unfortunately sometimes people only will hear what they want to hear, and no matter how much you try to point them in the right direction- they will choose to believe what they want and pursue that. Like you said though: the best thing to do is at least attempt to direct someone in a positive helpful manner. If they don't take the lessons you give them, or they continue to roleplay- that's on them, and that's their time they are wasting. Don't let it bother you too much or rob you of your time.
